Five weeks ago, on February 2nd, a certain groundhog saw its shadow, ensuring six more weeks of winter, and now, with winter’s reign, a more pleasant climate can be felt brewing in the distance. Spring is near.

Spring break is an annual event anticipated by students at Slidell High School, as well as students across America. This vacation is a mix of relaxation, ritual cleaning, and wild and crazy times, that are rarely forgotten. Every year many teens rush to popular beaches or escape from their homes in “small town USA” to break away from their usual routines. For those that do not always have the sufficient funds to participate in these activities, local activities can be found. Luckily, there are inexpensive alternatives to try while still getting a chance to experience a taste of freedom and releasing the stress of work or school.

Try these tips for a memorable Spring Break, and save a few dollars:

  • Visit your nearest State Park: Fontainebleau State park, for example. This great escape is a short drive east on highway 190, with 2,800 acres of pure adventure the park has easy access to the beach. Great for a day in the sun with friends.

  • Take a group of close friends to the nearest water park: Blue Bayou in Baton Rouge is a main attraction for the entire family, and a great to beat the heat. This thrill is no longer than an hour drive and well worth a packed SUV filled with elated teens. Season passes for 2010 are on sale now for $64.99 plus tax. Get yours today.

  • Be a tourist in your own downtown area: Downtown Slidell, otherwise known as the Camellia City is literally in our back yards and great distance for a stroll with friends or perhaps a daily cardio workout. Who knows what you may find, so be sure you Don’t forget your camera.

  • Simply commute to the nearest city, with the top down and music cranked up: The Great City of New Orleans, LA is 25 miles from Slidell. It is full of historic value and usual sights and smells that can hold anyone’s attention.

  • Go see a matinee every day: The Grand Theatre or Slidell Little Theatre are great ways to kill time, and enter into a new world. With matinee prices all day Tuesday, the movies offers a cool, refreshing environment to meet with friends and relax.

  • Make the highway your destination, heading west with really no place in particular to go: Be a free spirit, go wherever the wind sways your interest, or even better your heart.

  • Hit the newest theme park in your area: Dixie Landin’ Theme park, also located in Baton Rouge, LA, due to the destruction from Hurricane Katrina and in turn the closing of New Orleans’  infamous Theme Park Six Flags. Dixie Landin’ has adopted some of the preferred amusements form the former park, while giving them a Cajun twist, the park accommodates all ages and brings great joy and thrill to all its  visitors.

  • Get in touch with a side of yourself you never had much time to explore, nature for example: Yogi Bear’s Jelly stone Camp, in Robert, LA is perfect for a night under the stars, with fun and games, the night is bound to be full of memories that may be passed down to generations to come.

The time is near Slidell High, start planning your great escape, today!
