The lunch bell tolls and students scramble out of their seats to make their way to the cafeteria. Lunch time is a chance for pupils to catch up on gossip, connect with friends, and enjoy a “well-rounded” meal. What students are unaware of is the ingredients that go into their meals.

School lunches everywhere have become a hot topic in local and nationwide news. With obesity rates soaring in adolescents, children are more at risk than ever to become victim of diabetes. According to The New York Times, 17% of American children are overweight. These youths are developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes, which are afflictions normally only seen in adults.

One anonymous teacher has put her school’s cafeteria menu to the test. This teacher has gone by unknown, consuming and monitoring her establishment’s lunch. Not only has she undergone this experiment, but she has decided to blog about it. In her own personal study known as “FED UP: SCHOOL LUNCH PROJECT the teacher writes:

I’m eating school lunch just like the kids to raise awareness about what students eat every day. My hope is that the US becomes more reflective about how the food children eat effects their well-being and success in school.”

Every day in the year 2010, this anonymous teacher will walk through the lunch line with the students she teaches. This blog, being no attack towards lunch ladies, praises the schools who are doing lunch right, and brings to light those with less nutritional value.
